How to Replace the Barney Bolt on your Viwinco Window
If your window sash isn’t tilting properly or feels loose when seated, the issue may lie with Barney Bolt. The Barney Bolt is a critical component that secures the tilt latches within the sash frame. The tilt latches rely on the Barney Bolt for proper alignment and function. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of removing and replacing the Barney Bolt to restore smooth sash operation.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Replacement lock and keeper (available through parts.viwinco.com)
Step 1: Tilt In the Bottom Sash

Start by unlocking your window. Raise the bottom sash a few inches above the sill and tilt it inward to give yourself access to the lock mechanism.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Lock

Before you begin, make sure the lock lever is facing inward. Then, use a Phillips head screwdriver to undo the two screws holding the lock in place and remove it from the sash.
Important: Be careful not to lose the nylon cog underneath the lock. If the cog is damaged or missing, replace it before reinstalling the lock.
Step 3: Remove the Barney Bolt

Use plies to gently push the Barney Bolt through the frame from one side, so you can pull it out from the opposite side.
Step 4: Insert the New Barney Bolt

When inserting the new Barney Bolt, position it so that the hardware is facing up, and the bottom of the tilt latch is parallel with the top rail of the sash.
Step 5: Replace the Lock

Once the new Barney Bolt is in place, reinstall the nylon cog into the circular hole, then position the lock over it. Ensure that the large circular indent on the bottom lock aligns with the cog. Before securing the lock, check that the lock and keeper are properly aligned. When installing the first screw, manually depress the latch to prevent the screw from damaging the Barney Bolt. Once aligned, fully tighten the screws.
Important: Avoid overtightening to prevent damage to the frame.
