Storm Protection You Can Trust: Why Choose Viwinco OceanView

With hurricane season right around the corner, impact-resistant windows and doors offer exceptional protection during a time of uncertainty. With high wind speeds and intense rainfall, hurricanes wreak havoc in the coastal areas of the Atlantic throughout hurricane season. Viwinco OceanView windows and doors are specifically designed to safeguard homes in hurricane-prone regions, combining robust engineering with versatile design options. Manufactured in-house, Viwinco OceanView products are meticulously crafted to meet the unique demands of coastal environments.

Here’s an in-depth look at what makes the Viwinco OceanView Line a top choice of protection for hurricane-prone areas.

How are OceanView Windows Made?

The Viwinco OceanView impact-resistant windows and doors are manufactured entirely at our plant in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. For our impact products, the process begins at our state-of-the-art glass facility. The OceanView glass package is created using two specialized types of glass to provide premium protection.

The first type of glass we use is tempered glass. Tempered glass is created by running a piece of annealed glass through a tempering furnace. Annealed glass is standard glass that’s slowly cooled to reduce internal stress, making it stable but more prone to breakage than treated glass. In the tempering process, the annealed glass is heated close to its melting point and then rapidly cooled. The result is compressed glass that is nearly five times stronger than annealed glass. Due to surface compression, when tempered glass breaks, it shatters into tiny, rounded pieces, which is why it is commonly referred to as “safety glass”.

The second type of glass we use is laminated glass. Laminated glass is actually made up of three pieces. Two clear glass lites and a plastic-like interlayer known as polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The three components are sandwiched together and subjected to three different presses on our Bürkle laminating line. The first press removed the air and moisture from the three layers. The second applies heat and pressure that fuses the pieces together. The final press cools the glass to allow operators to safely handle it. After the two pieces are completed, they are transported to the Erdman insulated glass lines, where a spacer is applied, and they are assembled into a glass unit.

At the vinyl shop, reinforcement is added to the frames and sashes as needed, before being welded for additional protection. The glass unit is then installed, creating a solid, impact resistant unit designed to handle extreme weather conditions.

How Impact Windows Protect Your Home

Impact windows and doors are specially designed to help protect your home from windborne debris during powerful storms. This protection is critical because if a window breaks, it can create a dangerous breach in your home’s envelope. Once the envelope is compromised, air pressure can build rapidly inside, potentially leading to severe damage including blown-out windows and doors, or even a collapsed roof or walls.

Viwinco OceanView impact windows and doors are engineered to perform in these extreme conditions. During a storm, the outer layer of laminated impact glass may crack from flying debris or high pressure, but the PVB interlayer holds the broken pieces in place, keeping the window intact and your home protected. By maintaining their integrity, OceanView windows and doors help prevent dangerous pressure buildup, protect the building envelope, and safeguard the structure of your home when it matters most.

Other Benefits of Installing Impact Windows

There are several reasons why installing impact windows and doors is beneficial, the most important being the added safety they provide during powerful storms. However, there are additional advantages to consider when choosing impact products for your home. Our OceanView impact-resistant products offer enhanced thermal performance. Viwinco OceanView products contain a combination of Low-E and laminated glass, which can significantly reduce the amount of ultraviolet and infrared energy (heat) that enters the home, leading to reductions in your energy bill. Also, unlike bulky shutter systems, impact windows and doors enhance the look of your house and do not require set up to be functional. In addition to storm protection, impact windows and doors provide constant, year-round defense against intruders, and outdoor noise, keeping your home secure and comfortable daily.
