How to Replace the Lock & Keeper on your Viwinco Window
If your window lock feels loose or isn’t functioning properly, it may be time to replace the lock and keeper. These components work together to keep your sash securely closed and maintain your home’s security and energy efficiency. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of removing and replacing your window lock and keeper.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Replacement lock and keeper (available through parts.viwinco.com)
Step 1: Tilt In the Bottom Sash
Start by unlocking your window. Raise the bottom sash a few inches above the sill and tilt it inward to give yourself access to the lock mechanism.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Lock
Before you begin, make sure the lock lever is facing inward. Then, use a Phillips head screwdriver to undo the two screws holding the lock in place and remove it from the sash.
Important: Be careful not to lose the nylon cog underneath the lock. If the cog is damaged or missing, replace it before reinstalling the lock.
Step 3: Install the New Lock
Place the new lock in position, making sure the large circular indent on the bottom of the lock lines up with the nylon cog. Before tightening the screws, double-check that the lever is still facing inward. Once everything is properly aligned, secure the lock by tightening both screws.
Step 4: Remove the Keeper
To make this step easier, lower the sash until it stops. Unscrew the keeper from the top sash using your screwdriver. Be careful not to overtighten or strip the screws.
Step 5: Install the New Keeper
Position the new keeper so that the plate lines up with the existing screw holes. Start both screws, but do not fully tighten them yet.
Step 6: Align and Secure
Check that the lock and keeper are properly aligned. Once aligned, fully tighten the screws—but avoid overtightening to prevent damage to the frame.
