How to Install a Foot Bolt

The patio door foot bolt is a simple accessory that adds an extra layer of security while also giving you the flexibility to ventilate your home safely. Whether you’re installing a new door or adding this hardware to an existing one, proper foot bolt installation ensures smooth operation and a secure fit every time you lock up.

Install the foot bolt only after the patio door has been fully installed and adjusted.

Supplies Needed:

  • Drill
  • Phillips Head Screwdriver
  • Foot Bolt Installation Kit

Foot Bolt Kit Materials:

  • Foot Bolt
  • Foot Bolt Screws (x4)
  • Keeper
  • Keeper Screws (x2)
  • Keeper Washers (x2)

If any materials are missing from your Foot Bolt kit, please contact customer service.

Step 1: Install the Foot Bolt

Using the supplied screws, install the foot bolt on the operable panel. Position it so the bolt engages the keeper when locked, but has enough clearance to glide past smoothly when unlocked.

Tip: We recommend pre-drilling the foot bolt screw holes, as the sash panel contains aluminum reinforcement.

Step 2: Install the Keeper

Using the supplied washers and screws, install the keeper on the sill of the door, on the inside of the house. Line up the middle of the keeper with the edge of the operable panel.

Tip: Be careful not to overtighten the keeper screws. Fastening them too tight can interfere with the movement of the active panel.
